What parts of the body were removed before mummification?
Amenophis III

Ask Amenophis:
What parts of the body were removed before mummification?
  Were animals mummified, too?
Do any modern cultures practice mummification?

Five major organs were removed from the body before it was dried for mummification: the lungs, the liver, the stomach, the intestines, and the brain. The first four were preserved separately, each in a container called a "canopic jar", and buried with the mummy. The brain was considered so unimportant that it was simply thrown away. The heart, on the other hand, was considered so important to the soul in the underworld that it was always left in the body.
